Does it make sense to overclock a gaming PC in 2021

i2HARD experts have tested the performance of the gaming PC and found out how it changes when

Previously, CPU overclocking was used, notesleading, to achieve a level of performance close to flagship. But now it is almost impossible to do it at home, even increasing the clock frequency by 1.5 times is difficult to achieve.

The main purpose of testing the processor andvideo card was the definition of the difference between running games in Full HD with and without overclocking. First of all, in games, we tested AMD Ryzen 9 5950X with Palit GeForce RTX 3060 Dual. In this case, the R5 5600X processor was emulated. Also during testing, we used a Palit GeForce RTX 3080 Ti GameRock video card.

Game projects were launched at 1080p.In Red Dead Redemption 2, the RTX 3060 graphics accelerator at maximum settings allows you to get a comfortable frame rate, but at the same time the 5600X is not even half-loaded. It can be seen that with the RTX 3080 Ti, the processor can produce twice as many frames. In this game, however, overclocking had little impact on performance.

Cyberpunk 2077 with ultra settings consistently produces 60 frames per second on average with DLSS and ray tracing. But you don't need an overclocking or stock 5600X to do this.In this case, the average performance is 17 percent, and in rare events it is 25 percent.

In Watch Dogs: Legion with and without overclocking, the result was identical.

Resident Evil Village is experiencing completeloading all the processing power from both the RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3060. Overclocking the processor does not change performance in any way – it changes when installing another video card.

In Call of Duty, the difference is also between the RTX 3060 soverclocking and without practically not felt. At the same time, the frame rate is higher without overclocking with the RTX 3080 Ti. And if you compare the RTX 3080 Ti with and without overclocking, then in the second case, the average performance will be 17 percent higher.

Based on the results of this part of testing, it turned out thatOverclocking the processor and memory in a modern build can give a good performance boost only in competitive games or if the video card is powerful and the monitor resolution is – small.

The second part ran the same games, but at a resolution of 1440p. We tested the 5600X and RTX 3080 Ti kits with and without overclocking, Ryzen 9 5950X and RTX 3080 Ti with and without overclocking.

All configurations in Red Dead Redemption 2demonstrated an average number of frames around 60 fps. There was a noticeable advantage with overclocking, but only a small one. For better performance, you can lower the graphics settings.

In Cyberpunk 2077, similarly, there isn't much difference between the four configurations. All because of the RTX 3080 Ti, which is not capable of providing great performance.

But Far Cry 6 the difference in frame rateappeared. When overclocking the 5600X, the average performance increases by 10 percent and is already at the level of the 5950X. Overclocking the 5950X will improve performance by 5 percent, and in rare events – even more. Perhaps the newer the game, the more overclocking makes sense, the presenter notes.

Call of Duty 5600X Remains Same Numberframes as when running at 1080p with an RTX 3080 Ti graphics card. 5950X in this case, due to overclocking, shows average performance results at the level of 200 fps.

In general, the expert concludes, this is not a cheap gamingOn a computer, the main role is played by the video card – it bears the main load in most games. This means that overclocking the video card – This is usually the only way to increase the number of frames without changing graphics settings. Performance will increase on average by about 7-10 percent. A much more effective option would be to lower the game settings or change the graphics accelerator to a more powerful one.

In eSports games, graphics settings are unlikelywill be maximum, so if you have a video card of the RTX 3060 level or higher, you can use overclocking. The RTX 3060 will allow you to run modern games at 1080p with DLSS. The RTX 3080 Ti performs best at 1440p.
