What is REC "North"?
The Scientific and Educational Center "The North – Territory of Sustainable Development" is
What clusters does the scientific and educational center consist of?
The program of the center is 9 technological projects, which are divided into 5 clusters:
- "Energy supply and new energy carriers". Development of technologies for efficient use of hydrogen. Soon they will be tested in the North-East of Russia.
- "Rational nature management in permafrost". Creation of technologies for the optimal use of resources in the development of the Arctic.
- "Technology of economic activity in permafrost and new materials". Solving infrastructure problems in the North.
- "Biotechnology, medicine and healthcare in the Arctic". Increasing the level of health and working capacity of the indigenous and alien population
- "Technologies for ensuring social stability in the North-East of Russia". Improving the quality of life of the population of the northern regions, as well as attracting the population to the North-East of Russia.
Extreme climatic conditions do not prevent REC participants from innovating and doing their own developments
What projects are being implemented at the REC today?
The center is implementing 15 projects. Together organizations and scientists:
- Restore disturbed landscapes, and in extreme conditions.
— They develop inexpensive and environmentally friendly technologies for the extraction of gold, diamonds and more.
— Create materials to protect mining equipment. This will allow them to work longer.
– They diagnose hereditary diseases that are typical for residents of the Arctic and Subarctic.
“Vaccines are being developed against tumors.
— Ensure that buildings are safe and can withstand extreme conditions.
— They are developing therapy for diseases that are typical for the population of the North-East of Russia.
— They create smart clothes from graphene materials. By the way, it is obtained from natural Yakut graphite.
- Develop artificial skin, which itself "heals" wounds.
- They study human DNA.
- Predict the consequences of global climate change and how humans affect ecosystems.
— Create materials for flexible electronics.
Why do scientists and companies need the ecosystem of the center?
In a nutshell, REC Sever is a huge information hub and a huge ecosystem for organizations, in which each group of companies and universities has its own clearly defined tasks.
Industrial partners finance developments, responsible for their implementation in production. Scientific organizations (for example, departments of the Russian Academy of Sciences) are responsible for the development of innovations, as well as technology transfer. Educational organizations form CRCs - career development centers - and are responsible for training project and laboratory managers. Development institutions, in turn, act as an intermediary between the participants and are responsible for the exchange of technologies. These organizations analyze data, file invention patents, support exporters, and apply for R&D investments.
The center also helps with marketing and preparation of investment applications: it will tell you where to find resources for the project, how best to communicate with the authorities, customers, partners, and what to do after.

What are the tasks?
The main objectives of the center are:
— Develop and implement world-class technologies.
— To make the infrastructure for the work of scientists more modern.
— To train highly qualified specialists to work with modern technologies in the economic and social spheres.
— Make regions more innovative and give them access to global technology markets.
What has already been done?
— In 2021, a system was installed in the center that separates associated petroleum gas at the Tsarichanskoye field. It will reduce CO₂ emissions.
— Developed and tested composite polymer materials in real conditions.
— The drug "Betukladin" was launched on the market, it was created on the basis of local plant raw materials. It is designed to prevent and accelerate the rehabilitation process of those who have had viral diseases, including COVID-19.
- Made welded structures more reliable. This is especially important for work in the Arctic.
What about import substitution?
Particular attention in the work of the center is paid to import-substituting technologies. And here is what has already been created:
- A system that controls the temperature of the soil. This is useful in the construction and repair of buildings.
- A technology that is used to control the foundations of buildings and structures on freezing and thawing soils, as well as on uneven mountain surfaces.
— Cryostorage of plant seeds.
- Artificial skin, which is useful for skin grafting after burns and frostbite.
— Electroconductive fabric based on graphene for electrically heated smart clothes. She also monitors the vital signs of the inhabitants of the North.

The general public may be under the impression thattechnology and science in Russia develop exclusively in Moscow, St. Petersburg and, maybe, in Novosibirsk. But it's not. The North – Territory of Sustainable Development Center demonstrates that scientists and engineers from all over the country can work together to develop the Arctic, the North-East of Russia and other strategically important regions of the country. And even in extreme conditions.
