Double tap on the back: in Android 11 there will be new gesture control functions

We recently wrote that Android 11 will feature a new gesture system codenamed “Columbus” - double

tap on the back panel of the smartphone. Now, with the release of Android 11 Developer Preview 2, developers from XDA Developers have new details about this feature.

How it works

Previously they wrote that with the help of double tappingyou can turn on the camera, launch Google Assistant, pause/play playback, mute the sounds of incoming calls. Now two more actions have become known: take a screenshot and show recently used applications.

At the same time, the new gestures do not require specialhardware - only accelerometer and gyroscope sensor data to determine whether the user has touched the back panel twice. The developers also worked to reduce the number of false positives.

To reduce power consumption, gestures will not work when the screen is off, the lock screen is activated, or the camera is running.

It was previously assumed that the new gesture system would be exclusive to the Pixel 4a or Pixel 5, but the feature works on the Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL smartphones.
