According to experts, associated with the changeclimate, heat stress shortens telomeres in female viviparous reptiles of this species. This results in their babies being born with shorter telomeres, which usually happens at a much later age.

Thus, in populations exposed to high temperatures, the length of telomeres in newborn lizards approximately corresponds to the length of those in one-year-olds and adults from other populations.

Experts believe that something like this canoccur among other species of cold-blooded animals that, as a result of evolution, have adapted to a cool climate. At the moment, it is not entirely clear whether the situation can be improved somehow.
