Earth and Venus could have formed by “running into” each other over and over again

Researchers have discovered that the planets that are in the inner solar system (Mercury,

Venus, Earth, Mars) probably appearedas a result of repeated collisions. New work challenges traditional models of planet formation. In their work, astrophysicists used machine learning and giant collision simulations.

When the planets are forming, the clouds are unevenasteroids and debris from space bodies turn into neat and round planets. Scientists recently found that the process was likely more messy and complex than previously thought.

The findings challenge conventional wisdomthe view that collisions between smaller building blocks cause them to stick together, and over time, repeated “collisions” lead to an increase in the amount of new material on the growing baby planet.

Instead, the authors suggest and demonstrateproof of the new scenario - "collision-flight-return". Scientists believe that preplanetary bodies traveled for a very long time through the inner solar system, crashing and bouncing off each other, over and over again, each time this process slowed down. The authors of the work explain that this process is most similar to playing billiards.
