Elon Musk's Noah's Ark Will Take One Million People to Mars

Last week, May 31st, marked 10 years since the completion of SpaceX Dragon's first mission, COTS 2, to International

to the space station and back. Just a few years earlier, on September 28, 2008, the company launched Falcon 1 into orbit on its fourth attempt.

Elon Musk recently said on Twitter that he is ready to “build over 1,000 starships to bring life to Mars.”

The founder of SpaceX said that theywill become "a modern-day Noah's Ark," Musk said, repeating a statement he made during a recent interview with TED curator Chris Anderson. He then suggested that SpaceX would achieve this goal by 2050 and send a million people to Mars.

Musk's plans may cause controversy, and the mainthe reason is that, even given SpaceX's high standards, they are not very realistic. Perhaps the biggest indicator of this point is how inconsistent the businessman's statement is with NASA's plans for Mars.

While Musk says SpaceX will senda million people to Mars by 2050, NASA aims to get the first humans to Mars—probably with the help of SpaceX—by the 2030s or 2040s, kicking off a multi-year scientific exploration campaign.
