Engineers have figured out how to keep drones in the air “forever”

According to The South China Morning Post, a team of researchers from Northwestern Polytechnic

University (NPU) in China has developed a method of using high-energy laser beams to keep drones in the air “forever”.

While high-powered laser systems are more commonly associated with anti-drone technology, Professor Li Xuelong and his colleagues at the NPU have figured out how to charge drones instead of shooting them down.

A group of researchers equipped the drone with a module, which converts light energy into electricity. As a result, a high-energy laser beam can be directed at a drone for remote charging. The scientists also developed a protective algorithm that automatically adjusts the intensity of the laser beam if an obstacle appears in its path.

With this technology, engineers have successfullyconducted three field tests - one indoors and two outdoors during the day and night. They tested the method on optical drive drones (ODDs).
