Essential everything: Andy Rubin closes with just one smartphone

Essential has released an official statement announcing its cessation of operations.

Why?

The company was

created in 2015 by one of the founders of Android Andy Rubin. In 2017, the Essential Phone was released, which became the manufacturer’s only gadget.

Despite the high ratings, the smartphone did not becomepopular among users, but its sales left much to be desired. However, the Essential Phone continued to receive updates steadily, with Android updates topping the list.

In October last year, Essential showed a prototype of the Gem smartphone with an elongated (very!) display and a molded glass case, but it never reached the market or at least an official announcement.

“Despite all our efforts and what we have doneeverything we could, we don’t know how to deliver it to our customers. Given this, we have made the difficult decision to wind down all operations and close Essential,” Essential said in a statement.

The company's smartphones will continue to work, but morewill not receive updates. The security patch released on February 3rd was the last for the Essential Phone. But the company has posted important tools for developers on GitHub.

In addition, the Newton Mail service acquired by Essential is also closing, but access to it will remain until April 30.
