Experts have recreated the face of a saint who lived in the Middle Ages

Using a CT (computed tomography) scan of the priest's skull, an international team of researchers created

realistic depiction of the face of St. Anthony, patron of lost and stolen things. It shows a man with a cap of thinning brown hair, wearing the brown robe worn by Franciscan monks in the Middle Ages.

However, this is not the first facial reconstructionreligious figure. In 1981, Italian sculptor Roberto Cremesini created a copy of the skull of St. Anthony from plaster. According to a new study, which will appear in the March issue of the journal Digital Applications in Archeology and Cultural Heritage, it was based on a real skull. The exhumation of the saint was authorized by Pope John Paul II.

More than 30 years later, in 2014 Researchers from the Museum of Anthropology of the University of St. Anthony of Padua, together with a team of international forensic experts, carried out another facial reconstruction using only a digital copy of the exhumed skull.

Now, using CT and modern technology, scientists have improved the image.

Born in Lisbon on August 15, 1195,St. Anthony joined the Augustinians in 1210, but left 10 years later to join the Franciscans. He took part in the general chapter of the order in Assisi in 1221, at which he met Saint Francis. Saint Anthony died in the Arcella monastery in Padua, Italy, on June 13, 1231.

It is believed that this was the second fastest canonization in history, he was declared a saint just a year after his death, in May 1232.
