Research groups at the University of Tokyo,Keio University and Toyohashi University of Technology in Japan have developed a virtual robotic limb system. It is controlled by the users' feet in a virtual environment.
After the workout, users reported thatthe virtual robotic arms “became part of their own body.” The main goal of the study was to track changes in participants' perceptions as limbs were added. The data will contribute to the development of real physical robotic systems of additional limbs that people can use as naturally and simply as their own.
During the experiment, the researchers asked the participantsperform tasks in virtual reality (VR) using fake limbs. It turned out that once the participants understood how to use the system, they felt that the virtual robotic arms became their own extra limbs, and not just an extension of their real arms or legs.
