F-22 Raptor Pilots Get Next Generation Helmets

The US Air Force has begun testing the next generation of helmets for F-22 Raptor pilots. They

will be a replacement for the HGU-55/P.

What is known

The developer of the next generation helmet isLIFT Airborne Technologies of California. Tests are taking place at the US Air Force Base "Eglin" (Eglin), Florida. Five pilots of the F-22 Raptor of the 301st Fighter Squadron, as well as engineers from the 46th Test and 28th Test and Evaluation Squadrons, are participating in the tests.

Currently, pilots use HGU-55/P helmets, developed in the 1980s. They no longer meet modern technologies and sometimes cause back or neck problems in pilots. When the g-force reaches 9G, the helmet weighs more than 12 kg.

The next generation helmet is being developed inwithin the Next Generation Fixed Wing-Helmet (NGFWH) program. It is made from carbon fiber, making it about half the weight of the HGU-55/P. There is an air vent at the back, and soft liners inside the unit, the location of which can be manually adjusted by pilots.
