Face Unlock is back with the Pixel 7 series, but there's a catch

The long-suffering face unlock, which became Google's stumbling block back in the Pixel 4, has disappeared without a trace.

Pixel series for three years.Presenting the Pixel 7 family yesterday, the company briefly mentioned the return of Face Unlock, without giving this aspect due attention. And here's why: if in the case of Pixel 4 a complex system of LiDAR cameras was used that read the 3D profile of faces, then in Pixel 7 and 7 Pro unlocking occurs in the same way as in the most budget smartphones - through the front camera.

Claiming the use of advanced AI algorithms,Google, however, does not allow you to pay for purchases with your face or enter secure applications - for these you still need to put your finger on the under-screen scanner. In other words, the company tacitly confirms that the reliability and safety of such protection leaves much to be desired. In a separate comment, a Google representative clarified that Face Unlock on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro is more of a feature for comfortable work than a smartphone security system - its role is played by a fingerprint scanner.
