Facebook: new AI will help find drug combinations for cancer treatment

The new AI was developed by Facebook AI Research and the Helmholtz Center in Munich. This is the first AI model

which is able to evaluate how different medications will work in the body.

This can speed up the ability to discover newtreatments for diseases such as cancer, since drug research often takes five years or more, said Fabian Theis of the Helmholtz Center and one of the authors of this work.

The new model measures how individual cells change in response to treatment with a specific set of drugs, and also records these responses.

This approach could theoretically help treat cancers that vary from person to person and respond differently to the same treatment.

AI works with various variables:the type of drug, what it is used in combination with, the dose level, when it is taken, and the type of cell it targets. The algorithm can then use this information to predict the effect of drug combinations.
