Facebook Orion AR glasses make smartphones unnecessary

Over the past decade, smartphones have radically changed our lives, now almost everyone has them,

including primary school students, andkindergarteners have a smart watch with the ability to receive calls. Smartphones are used for literally everything, now it is not only a means of communication; users have long stopped making phone calls and exchanging SMS, because now there is the Internet. Everywhere you look, there are video calls, advanced instant messengers, social networks.

Also, the smartphone has become a real photo andvideo lab, users take pictures of everything, process, improve directly in the smartphone, and then send it to cloud storage or immediately publish it. There has never been such a speed. After photographing, I had to wait a few days until your photo appears in the wall newspaper. This is an entertainment and gaming center, all the games are already there, videos, films, music videos, series and so on. In general, smartphones are our everything. However, Facebook swung it all, and threatens to replace them with their smart glasses.

Smart glasses instead of a smartphone

One of the Facebook labs has been driving for some time.work on creating smart glasses with support for AR-technologies, however, technical problems forced the company to seek help from Luxottica, which is a manufacturer of glasses for Ray-Ban, as well as Oakley. The work began to boil with new vigor, and the future killer of smartphones got the code name Orion. How can they replace the smartphone? Simply! They will support work with cellular networks, that is, they can receive calls, go online. The screen of the smartphone will replace the display integrated into the glasses. For the eyes, the image will appear larger than on any smartphone, so there will be no problems displaying any information. In general, all the functions of a smartphone can easily fit in glasses.

True, we can only be happy for them for years.in five, though ... if the response is good, the company will accelerate. The project became a priority and Zuckerberg himself put it under his own control, putting aside some projects, including the development of the Portal smart display, as well as the Oculus VR headset.

How will it work

In principle, the idea itself is quite feasible, and somethingsimilar was already represented by other manufacturers. But the main difficulty in implementing this project is that the device needs to be made as miniature as possible so that it does not go beyond the standard for ordinary glasses, otherwise people just won’t use it - it’s inconvenient, and nobody wants to look silly in monstrous masks. Therefore, designers from the Italian company Luxottica joined the project. This team has experience, they worked with Google.

Earlier it was stated that the cameras will receive points withof another project - Oculus Insight, but they can be controlled with the help of a voice assistant, which will be developed specifically for these glasses. An additional data entry method will also be implemented - a special Agios sensor that looks like a ring. So far, Facebook has not shown any results, by 2023 they promise to launch the initial version. In this case, the glasses will be able to transmit to streaming services or to their channel all that a person sees. How this will look in terms of protecting privacy is still unknown, because even Google Glass in some countries was forbidden to wear in public places.

What others

Last fall, North introduced itsA variant of smart glasses called Focals. Of course, their functionality is not like that of a smartphone, however, they offered smart instructions (step-by-step), showed weather information, allowed to manage Spotify music service, recorded sound and some more functions. As for Google Glass, the first generation was a failure, because adequate software was not ready, and the design of the glasses was clumsy, which is why users were simply embarrassed to wear them again. But now there is a second generation, but not in the consumer market. Points for corporate customers are available for 1 thousand dollars.
