Facebook said it will shut down its facial recognition system as early as this month and delete facial scan data.
Facial recognition technology allowsAnalyze photos and videos on Facebook that may contain your image. For example, this could be your profile photo or a photo or video where you are tagged. As a result, a unique numeric code is created, which is called a template. If you turn on facial recognition, Facebook creates a template that can be used to recognize your image in other photos, videos, and other content created with the camera (for example, video broadcasts).
The social network noted in a blog that more than a third of active users of the application have chosen to have turned on the face recognition setting.
“There are many concerns about the place of technologyfacial recognition in society, and the authorities are still developing a clear set of rules that would govern its use, ”said Jerome Pesenti, vice president of artificial intelligence for Meta, Facebook's parent company. "In the face of continuing uncertainty, we believe it is appropriate to limit the use of facial recognition to just a few scenarios."
Facebook is also considering the possibilityusing facial recognition in products such as smart glasses. For example, facial recognition can be used to determine the names of people you can't remember. But company employees expressed fears that the technology could be used by stalkers.
