Engineer Mark Rober worked for three years on a project that culminated in the dropping of two chicken eggs
What is known
Marc Robert worked as an engineer for nine yearsNational Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). For seven years he was involved in the Curiosity Mars rover project.
After leaving the space agency Robertdecided to start his own project. Its essence was to raise two chicken eggs to a great height and return them back safe and sound.
The engineer developed a rocket for this, whichhigh altitude launches a weather balloon. Next, the rocket should begin to fly towards the surface and release the eggs at a height of about 100 meters. According to calculations, if the final speed of the egg is 120 km / h, then when it comes into contact with a soft surface, it will survive.
Marc Robert conducted three tests, each ofwhich failed successfully. As a result, the engineer turned to other NASA specialists for help. One of them recommended that the enthusiast completely change the rocket and conduct experiments in the desert so as not to get in trouble with the law.
As a result, the "spacecraft" was able to developspeed Mach 2 (2470 km/h). For one egg, mechanical protection was developed, as in the Opportunity and Spirit rovers. In addition, it received a heat shield to prevent freezing. The second egg was decided to be placed in an inflatable ball.
It was possible to raise the rocket only 30 km due to a failure. When falling, the eggs reached a speed of 240 km / h, i.e. double the calculated value. But despite the fact that not everything went according to plan, both eggs remained safe and sound.
