Found a mysterious ring near the neighboring galaxy: its nature raises questions

Western Sydney University researchers, along with an international team of experts, discovered

a mysterious round ring near a neighboring galaxy. Its nature is still unknown. This may be the first known case of an intergalactic supernova remnant—the remnant of an exploding star.

The researchers called it the "wandering" supernova remnant J0624-6948. However, now it is most likely located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way.

In an article published in Monthly Notices of theThe Royal Astronomical Society, lead author of the study, Professor Miroslav Filipović of the University's School of Sciences, said the discovery was exciting and raised many unanswered questions.

"When we discovered this almost perfectly roundradio object, we thought it was another ORC (odd radio circle). But after additional observations, it became clear that this object is most likely something else,” said Professor Filipovich.

The ring is very different from the five other knownORC is a flatter radio spectral index, no prominent central galaxy as a possible host, and larger apparent size. All of this suggests that it might be an object of a different type.

"The most plausible explanation isthat the object is the remnant of an intergalactic supernova due to an exploding star that was on the outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud, ”the scientists conclude.
