A planet the size of Earth has been found, but much heavier and “faster” than it

Using NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), an international team of astronomers has discovered a new

exoplanet with an ultrashort period. The alien world has been named HD 20329 b and orbits its host star in less than a day. It is much “faster” than the Earth.

TESS surveys about 200,000 brightest starsnear the Sun in order to search for transiting exoplanets. So far, the satellite has identified about 6,000 candidate exoplanets (TESS Objects of Interest, or TOI), of which 268 are confirmed.

Now a group of astronomers recently confirmedone TOI tracked by TESS. In a recently published research paper, they report that a transit signal has been detected in the light curve of the solar-type star HD 20329 (or TOI-4524). Its planetary nature was confirmed by subsequent radial velocity measurements. They were carried out using the HARPS-N spectrograph.

The radius of HD 20329 b is 1.72 Earth radiiand is about 7.42 times more massive than our planet. This means that its average bulk density is approximately 8.06 g/m³. This exoplanet takes about 22.2 hours to complete a full orbit around its host star. The results of the study showed that HD 20329 b is located only 0.018 AU. from the star, and its equilibrium temperature is estimated at 2000 Kelvin (1726.850 °C).

The authors of the article do not rule out that there are more objects in the HD 20329 system, but further observations are required to confirm this.
