Found a remedy for alcohol poisoning: mice were cured with a hormone

Biologists from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center have found a cure

consequences of alcohol intoxication.The introduction of the hormone FGF21 made it possible to quickly restore coordination of movements and bring consciousness to mice under the influence of ethanol. The study opens a new direction for the treatment of acute alcohol poisoning.

In previous studies, scientists have found thatThe hormone FGF21, which is produced by the liver, affects the perception and processing of alcohol. In particular, FGF21 has been shown to inhibit alcohol intake in sober mice and stimulate water intake to prevent dehydration in intoxicated mice. In addition, this hormone protects the liver from destruction.

In a study whose results were publishedin the journal Cell Metabolism, researchers injected mice with enough ethanol to make them pass out, simulating extreme alcohol intoxication. Some animals were then forcibly injected with FGF21.

The analysis showed that the experimental animalsit took half the time to regain consciousness compared to the control group, which did not receive a hormone injection. Similar results were obtained when the researchers administered a lower dose, sufficient to significantly affect the coordination of animals: mice injected with FGF21 recovered faster.

Scientists have found that FGF21 acts onnoradrenergic neurons, a type of nerve cell in the brain that promotes wakefulness. It does not affect the metabolism of alcohol, but restores certain brain functions. 

Preparations based on this hormone are already being tested.in clinical trials related to diabetes, weight loss and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Researchers believe that they will also be suitable for eliminating the effects of excessive drinking.
