Found a way to give up cigarettes, alcohol and psychoactive substances: brain stimulation helps

A team of researchers from the University Hospital of Dijon in France commissioned a systematic reviewand

The team searched several scientific databases to find randomized controlled trials of NIBS in adult smokers who want tothrow.

In recent years, NIBS has appeared - this is a newtherapeutic method for the treatment of disorders associated with the use of alcohol, psychoactive substances, as well as addictive disorders. Another method has helped treat diseases associated with tobacco use, but little was known about the effectiveness of NIBS in long-term abstinence.

Therefore, the authors of the new work combined all previous studies to measure the overall impact of NIBS on the rejection of NIBSThey included seven studies involving 699 patients.

The authors combined seven studies:it turned out that smokers who received NIBS were 2.39 times more likely to be long-term abstinent than regular people. The risk ratio was higher when considering different types of stimulation of certain parts of the brain.

The two most popular forms of NIBS are transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).tDCS sends a low-intensity direct current through the brain using electrodes placed on the patient's scalp.A weak electrical current modulates the excitability of neurons.

The TMS uses a metal coil thatplaced on the patient's scalp. The coil generates magnetic pulses that induce short-term electrical currents in the cortical tissue. Depending on the frequency of the impulses, the excitability of the target area either increases or decreases.
