Using NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), an international team of astronomers has discovered a new warm planet.
Brown dwarfs are intermediateobjects, something between planets and stars. Their mass range is from 13 to 80 Jupiter masses (0.012 to 0.076 solar masses). To date, scientists have discovered many brown dwarfs, but objects such as HIP 33609 are very rare. Their peculiarity is that they revolve around other stars.
Recently, a group of astronomers led by NoahVowell of Michigan State University discovered a transit signal in the light curve of a B star known as HIP 33609. Subsequent spectroscopic and photometric observations confirmed that it is a massive and warm brown dwarf.
Feature of the newly discovered brownThe dwarf is that it is “bloated”, its radius is about 58% greater than that of Jupiter, and its mass is estimated to be 68 times that of the gas giant. Observations have shown that HIP 33609's orbit is eccentric, with a measured orbital period of 39.47 days. The equilibrium temperature of a brown dwarf is 1 237 Kelvin (963.85 °C).
The radius of the star HIP 33609 is about 1.86 times the radius of the Sun and is 2.38 times more massive than our star. Effective temperature is about 10 400 K (10,126.85 °C)
Astronomers noted that the unusual parameters of HIP 33609 b, especially its long orbital period, will help expand our knowledge of transiting satellites around hot stars.
