Professor of the Department of Security in the Digital World, MSTU. Bauman Vitaly Vekhov told how it works
Official information about the new methodfraud published on the website of the Central Bank. The scheme is as follows: on behalf of a bank, a fraudster calls the client and offers to exchange cashback or other accumulated miles, points, etc. Allegedly, to confirm the operation, the client is asked for bank data and SMS with a code from the bank. After that, money is stolen from the account and the scammers disappear.
But this type of fraud is not widespread. Basically, these are isolated cases.
“Almost everyone now knows what cashback is.But all kinds of points, miles are the so-called digital currency, the rates are set by the organization that introduces this cashback. Accordingly, somewhere for one ruble one point, somewhere for one ruble 3.84 points are written off, and this is what in some cases confuses citizens when scammers offer them such “exchange” options. It’s just that the first seed, a psychological failure, occurs, and while a person understands what’s what and how correct what is being offered to him, as a rule, there follows a proposal to transfer the data of a payment instrument - an electronic wallet, a bank card or a bonus card linked to a bank card, so that subsequently commit theft of funds from an electronic payment instrument. I remind you that bank employees will never ask for your financial data,” Vekhov noted.
