From Terminator Killer to R2-D2 from Star Wars: the most famous robots in cinema

The word “robot” first appeared in the play R.U.R (short for Czech.) by Czech playwright Karel Capek in 1920.

Rossumovi univerzální roboti, “Rossumskieuniversal robots"). It is noteworthy that Capek's robots are not made of metal, but are artificial living beings created using chemical engineering.

Literary examples of mechanized humanoidsand automata are thousands of years old. The Iliad, an epic poem by Homer dating from the 8th century BC, speaks of Hephaestus, the god of metalworking. He created golden maids to help him in his forge. And in the lll century epic Argonautica, Hephaestus builds Talos, a mechanical bronze colossus that patrolled the shores of Crete, throwing stones at the invaders. Modern culture is also rich in impressive robots.

Six

A feature of the humanoid Cylons from the series from"Battlestar Galactica" in that they were almost perfectly similar to people in appearance and even in biology (in the updated version). Number Six is the most memorable Cylon due to her role in the storyline and long screen time. Number Six plays key roles in Cylon society. She is the first humanoid Cylon that viewers see in the remake series. This model is ruthless to all who stand in its way.

In the series, humanoid Cylons have millionsclones or templates, and they all have the same personality. When they die, their memories are transferred to others, like a huge cloud network that can be stored, reprogrammed, and even linked to computers.

Notably, the Cylons in the 2003 miniseriesyear and the subsequent full-fledged remake series are fundamentally different from the Cylons of the original series. In the new version, the Cylons were created by humans as worker robots and soldiers. As in the original series, the Cylons destroy much of human civilization.

WALL-E

The name WALL-E is an abbreviation and in Russianvariant stands for "Universal Annihilator Landscape Light - Intelligent". It is a garbage compactor robot that lives on a waste-covered Earth in the future. The only robot of its kind, WALL-E single-handedly cleans up an empty planet while the remaining humans continue to exist in a space colony.

Although scientists have already built similar robots forexploration of the Moon and Mars, humanity is (yet) far from being in a similar dystopian setting where rovers and rovers like WALL-E will clean up the planet for humans.

T-800

The 1984 Terminator movie may be the answerbecause some people are afraid of robots and artificial intelligence. According to the plot, in the future, people are hunted by machines controlled by Skynet, a fictional supercomputer of the US Department of Defense.

T-800 aka Cyberdyne SystemsModel 101 is an advanced humanoid robot. He was sent to 1984 from a dystopian future to kill John Connor, the future leader of the human resistance, before he was even born. But in the second film of the Terminator 2: Judgment Day series, the T-800 is reprogrammed and becomes the main character - helping to save the young John Connor from more advanced robots, again sent to kill him.

With advanced artificial intelligence andon-board sensors, as well as a nuclear energy cell instead of a heart, the T-800 model can “live” for 120 years. Proving that some robots can be useful and even save lives, the T-800 has become an iconic figure in cinematic history. Mankind is still far from creating its analogue.

R2-D2 from Star Wars

Undoubtedly one of the most popular robots inmovie history is R2-D2, the loyal little droid who played a pivotal role in the storyline of the Star Wars franchise. He helped many characters from Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi to Luke Skywalker. Equipped with handy tools, this astromech droid can hack into computer systems, shield hologram projections, and repair hyperdrives. He interacts perfectly with computers and throws himself into dangerous situations without a second thought. Such adventurism saves everyone in the days of numerous incidents that often change the course of the history of the galaxy.

Hi-tech wrote a lot about service robots -cleaners, bartenders and even cooks. And while scientists aren't yet ready to build a droid as autonomous and agile as R2, of all the robots on the list, it's the easiest and safest to build. Perhaps this will happen in the next 20 years.
