Galaxy Fold is already outdated: Samsung is preparing a smartphone with a “stretchable display”

While other manufacturers are just taking their first steps in the field of flexible smartphones, Samsung is already thinking about

devices with a stretchable display.

What is known

Patently Mobile noticed that the Korean companyregistered a patent for a display that can be enlarged on the go. The document says that the user can control the smartphone in two modes - open and closed. In the first case, the device looks more classic, and in the second, the gadget gets an elongated display with a larger diagonal.

Judging by the patent, such a gadget will beuse flexible displays that curl in closed mode and unroll in open mode. Yes, no sliders or interchangeable screens. The user will be able to control the size of the display using a movable panel on the back of the device.

With the new design, Samsung can technicallywill release a smartphone with two display sizes at one price. Or the company will start releasing different models with expanding screens. Either way, this will give Samsung a competitive advantage. Moreover, the device concept is not limited to the smartphone and can be applied to tablets, car displays, and so on.

However, it is worth noting that this is only a patent, which may not survive to the production line. In addition, Samsung still hasn’t figured out flexible displays in folding smartphones and is just figuring out the niche. The company just released the first version of the Galaxy Fold, and is rumored to be planning to release a second model in 2020 along with a flexible “flip phone.”
