General Dynamics has received more than $1 billion to build two Virginia-class nuclear submarines for the US Navy

What is known

The deal amounted to $1.076 billion.Funds have been allocated for the purchase of hull materials and major equipment for nuclear submarines SSN 812 and SSN 813. Work under the contract will be completed by September 2033.

Virginia-class submarines are designed withrequirements of the 21st century. They can carry torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles. Some submarines will receive hypersonic missiles at the end of this decade.

Submarines have a length of 114.9 meters, a width of up to 10.5meters and a displacement of 7800 tons. The speed of the submarine is more than 60 km/h. On average, each submarine costs the US Navy more than $2 billion.
