Genetic evolution of wild animals is happening faster than scientists thought

An international team of researchers has developed statistical methods for assessing genetic variation.

Scientists applied quantitative methods to datalong-term observations of 19 species of animals around the world. The study assessed the contribution of genes versus environment to a species' ability to survive and reproduce. The results showed that most of the wild animal populations studied were able to adapt quickly.

Scientists note that some studiesincluded in the work were carried out for almost 30 years. They have studied species such as the magnificent wrens in Australia, spotted hyenas in Tanzania, song sparrows in Canada, and red deer in Scotland.

The results of the work, according to the researchers,showed that the contribution of genes to the ability of species to survive and reproduce was two to four times higher than previously thought. The estimates obtained vary between populations, but the additive genetic variance in relative fitness was significant in most cases, and on average twice the previous estimates.

Scientists say that anthropogenic impactleads to extremely rapid changes in our world. Wild animals are losing their habitat due to agriculture, industry and transport development. Climate change is also changing living conditions. Geneticists believe that rapid adaptation will help animals survive in new conditions, and a new study shows that the chances of this are quite high.

This study shows that many species can adapt quickly, provided they are not completely affected by habitat loss and climate change.
