A group of geneticists from InBio, led by Nicole Brackett, analyzed the gene encoding
Researchers compared genetic dataanalysis of domestic cats with results obtained from some exotic felines. The analysis showed a high degree of variability in the gene, which, according to scientists, shows that the expression of the Fel d 1 gene is not vital for cats.
Geneticists have used CRISPR-Cas9 to destroy Fel d 1. The experiment showed high performance in vitro (in vitro), scientists plan to conduct further studies on live cats.
The domestic cat is one of the mostcommon sources of allergens that affect humans. Up to 15% of people are allergic to cats. The reaction can range from relatively harmless rhinoconjunctivitis to severe asthma. According to researchers, there are more than 500,000 asthma attacks each year in the US caused by cat allergies. In 350 thousand cases, an ambulance call is required.
Scholars point out that despite the widespreadthe spread of allergic reactions and the possible severe consequences of contact with the allergen, modern methods of treatment only eliminate the symptoms (antihistamines) or have low effectiveness (allergen immunotherapy).
Fel d 1 is the main feline allergen that causesreaction in people. This protein belongs to secretoglobins and is produced by the salivary, sebaceous and lacrimal glands of cats. The level of protein production varies between different breeds of cat and even within cats of the same species. The researchers note that although cats produce other substances that cause an allergic reaction in humans, Fel d 1 is the most dangerous and poses the risk of severe complications.
Our data shows that editingFel d 1 can be of great benefit to people with cat allergies. The dangerous irritant will be removed directly at the source of the allergy. The study paves the way for further experiments using CRISPR to suppress cat allergens.
