Germany shuts down all nuclear power plants in the country

There are no more operating nuclear power plants left in Germany. The last three operating nuclear power plants in the country

were disconnected on the night of April 16, 2023.

Until April 15, threestations: Isar 2 (Isar 2), Emsland (Emsland) and Neckarwestheim 2 (Neckarwestheim 2). They are in the federal states of Bavaria, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg respectively.

Minister for the Environment and Nuclearsafety, Steffi Lemke (Steffi Lemke) stated the impossibility of controlling the risks in the event of an accident at a nuclear power plant. The decision to stop the operation of the last stations had opponents. On April 15, they held rallies in several German cities, but this did not help.

The German authorities have made a final decisionturn off all nuclear power plants in 2011. This happened after the disaster in Japan at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant (Fukushima-1). Germany wanted to stop the operation of all nuclear power plants in 2022, but the shutdown was postponed to April 2023 due to the war in Ukraine.

Note that not all European Union countriesfollow the path of Germany. If Italy and Sweden decided to abandon nuclear energy back in the 1980s after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, then Belgium is in no hurry with this. Brussels has postponed the decision to shut down nuclear power plants in the country.

At the same time, the Netherlands and Poland want to buildnew nuclear energy platforms. France, with its 57 reactors, intends to remain the leading European country in the field of nuclear energy.
