Global warming will lead to increased frequency of extreme dangerous thunderstorms

New research from Newcastle University (UK) has found that rising temperatures are

a major factor in increasing the extreme intensity of short-term rainfall that typically occurs in summer and causes dangerous flash flooding in the UK.

The work highlights the need to take action to adapt to climate change, as higher rainfall increases the risk of flash floods and extreme hazardous rainfall worldwide.

An international team of scientists analyzeddata from observational, theoretical and model studies. The aim is to study the intensification of extreme rainfall, the causes of these extreme events and the impact on flash floods.

Researchers have found that extremePrecipitation increases with warming, typically at a rate corresponding to increases in atmospheric humidity. This is to be expected. However, the work also showed that rising temperatures in some regions are influencing short-term heavy downpours in much longer periods of time. to a greater extent. 

We know that climate change bringsWe are experiencing hotter, drier summers and warmer, wetter winters. But in the past we have struggled to capture the details of extreme rainfall events, as they can be highly localized and occur in a matter of hours or even minutes. Thanks to our new research, we now know more about how really heavy rainfall events can be affected by change climate. Because warmer air holds more moisture, the intensity of rain increases as temperatures rise.
