Gold Tattoo Tracks Stress Levels Instantly

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a temporary "electronic tattoo" for...

palm that instantly tracksarousal and stress with the help of skin electrical conductivity. Electronic tattooing is a reliable way to track emotions for people with conditions such as anxiety or depression.

The experiment showed that the tattoo lastedon the palm of the hand for 15 hours while subjects were engaged in daily activities such as driving, eating and exercising. The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Communications.

Electronic tattoo on palm —temporary. The scientists also created two S-shaped gold ribbons that are located on the palm and ensure the transfer of data from the tattoo to the wristwatch. They send data to the smartphone via a wireless network. Gold ribbons are very thin, only 750 nanometers in thickness. For reference, the thickness of a sheet of paper is about 100 000 nanometers.

Nanshu Lu, professor at the University of Texasat the Cockrell School of Engineering in Austin, said electronic tattooing would allow patients to track their stress levels without using bulky medical equipment. “Our tattoo is ultra-thin and invisible, but is mechanically stable enough to withstand all types of activity,” explains the study author.

When people experience strong emotions, eccrineThe sweat glands are filled, making the skin more electrically conductive. The tattoo monitors stress levels in the part of the body where the most of these glands are concentrated—the palm. According to scientists, the device will provide the owner with more accurate stress readings than a smart watch.
