GooglepaysWikimedia Foundationfor providing the most accurate and up-to-date information in its search engine
Launched last yearWikimedia Enterprisesallows clients to reuse huge chunks of information from servicesWikimedia, access its content more efficiently. Instead of relying on free data dumps and public APIs to extract information from Wikipedia web pages,Wikimedia Enterpriseallows clients to use APIs thatare better suited for processing and disseminating information on a much larger scale. The service also allows clients to prevent outdated or inaccurate information from appearing on the Internet outside of Wikipedia.
Although you may not notice it, Google uses servicesWikimediain several ways. This is evident in its “Knowledge Panels”, which appear on the side of the search results page when you search for people, places or things in Google's large database. Wikipedia is one of the sources thatGoogleoften used to fill out information on these panels,Googlealso quotes Wikipedia in the information panels it adds to some videosYouTubeto combat misinformation and conspiracy theories.
It is not entirely clear how the new partnership withGooglewill change the situation for users. Tim Palmer, managing director of Google's search partnerships, vaguely commented thatGooglehopes for “deepening” of its partnership with the FoundationWikimediausing the serviceEnterprise. Lane Becker, Senior DirectorWikimedia EnterpriseEarned Revenue said the service is still in its early stages and declined to comment on specific usesGoogle.
AlthoughWikimedia Foundation, apparently receives some money from Enterprise's management, the organization expects its services to represent only a small portion of its income.
