Over the years of existence, cloud gaming services have not been able to prove that they can fight on equal terms
What is Google Stadia?
Google Stadia is a cloud gaming service thatallows you to run heavy games on weak PCs, smartphones, TV set-top boxes on Android, and in the future, smart TVs. The system works in such a way that the server acts as a computing machine, processing graphics and transmitting the image with the action to the user’s screen.
Since everything happens via the Internet, the main thing isThe disadvantage of such services is the delay between pressing a button and the character’s action. Essentially, the signal is first sent to the servers, processed there and returned to the player, which takes a relatively long time compared to classic consoles and PCs. Google tried to get rid of this drawback with the help of Stadia Controller, which connected directly to the servers, which in theory should reduce response time.
What happened
Wired journalist gave Stadia 6 out of 10possible. Among the advantages, the author noted that the service “reduces the financial barrier” for players. In addition, Stadia Controller turned out to be convenient. The same long response times and lags, and along with them the weak starting library of games, were the cons.
At the same time, journalist Polygon noted thatthe delay, although it occurs, is rarely and mostly the gameplay feels natural, like on a classic console. The author wrote down the connection itself as the main problem, as sometimes the game sagged, and in Mortal Kombat 11 the character refused to react to the player’s actions at all.
The Guardian also did not praise the serviceGoogle, giving it 3 out of 5. The author noted the same problems, but also added that he doesn’t understand who needs Stadia in 2019. The starter set costs $120, which is not much cheaper than Xbox One, PlayStation 4 or the same Nintendo Switch. In addition, classic consoles do not have the disadvantages of delayed response.
It is worth noting that some reviews are stillare being supplemented since Google did not release Stadia with all the promised features. For example, there is no Family Sharing, a list of friends, streaming through an application on iOS, and the ability to click a button to enter the game the user is watching.
At the same time, reviewers praise Stadiafor the quality of the transmitted picture. We can say that the games run on high, if not maximum, graphics settings, since the detail of the characters and environments is comparable to the PC versions of the projects. Still, some games are launched with a good picture only on their own terms. For example, Shadow of the Tomb Raider works in two modes - 60 fps and 1080p or 30 fps, but with royal 4K.
“There is no reason why anyone should buy Stadia now,” The Verge.
“The biggest problem is that Stadia at launch did not provide smooth interaction in games,” - Polygon.
“The streaming future for games is not yet here,” CNET.
“If the circumstances are right, ifIf you have a strong connection, Stadia feels like a potential way of the future for the industry, and game streaming feels like magic." - GamesRadar.
At launch, Google Stadia is only availablewith a $10 subscription that gives you access to high graphics settings, 4K and free games. The company will launch a basic free version in February 2020, but in both cases the games will have to be purchased. Google Stadia is not Netflix. Now the user pays separately for access to servers and buys games for his library.
Stadia's launch lineup includes 22 games including Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, Mortal Kombat 11 and Metro: Exodus.
