What is known
Grounded is the next project from the authors of Pillarsof Eternity and The Outer Worlds. Judging by the trailer, players will be treated to a “survival game” in which they will be reduced to the size of an ant. As a result, instead of monsters from space or another world, insects will become the main threat. According to the classics of the genre, the main task is to survive by building your own house, creating weapons and fighting.
According to the developers, Grounded has “a hugean ecosystem of insects” that live their own lives and also try to survive. Moreover, some will be friendly, while others will be innately determined. For example, spiders and some insects will try to kill the player, while ants are neutral until angered.
Players will also have to explore the world, completedaily errands and collect resources for crafting. The latter will be useful for creating weapons and equipment, such as armor from acorn shells. Moreover, you can survive both alone and in online co-op. Obsidian even decided to add a story to the game, which will be conveyed through missions and environments.
“Gounded will showcase our unique take on gamingsurvival genre, creating an unforgettable experience. It's the perfect place to flex our creative muscles. We want to create a universal sandbox where players can create their own unforgettable experiences,” the developers wrote.
Additionally, despite Obsidian's experience in RPG development, Grounded will not have an RPG mechanic. Therefore, character progression occurs through equipment that the player finds or creates.
Grounded will be released digitally in spring 2020on Xbox One and PC (in Steam and Microsoft Store). In addition, the game will be available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers. Still, this will not be a full-fledged release, but a so-called “Early Access”. Obsidian is taking on a game in the survival genre for the first time, so they decided to develop the project together with the players.
