Hackers have learned to steal data from computers using cables as antennas

Specialists from Israel's Ben-Gurion University of the Negev discovered an interesting vulnerability, using

in which an attacker can steal data from a computer using a SATA cable. Discuss

SATA is an interface for connecting hard drives, optical drives, and other storage devices on a computer. With these cables, most of the drives are connected to the motherboard.

The trick of the new method is that thesecables can be turned into an antenna for wireless data theft. The method was called SATAn, or "Satan". To activate the vulnerability, a special program must be downloaded to the computer.

As a result of a compromised SATAn deviceuses the standard SATA cable communication protocol to encode sensitive information into overhead signals for normal drive activity. Electromagnetic "noise" begins to be generated, and the SATA cable becomes an antenna and broadcasts a signal at a frequency of 6 GHz - the transmission range is limited to one meter.

According to experts, ordinary usersthis method is not threatening, but can be used for industrial espionage. Therefore, companies need to be careful and take care of protective measures such as cable shielding.
