Hackers stole over 780 GB of information from Electronic Arts, including the source code of FIFA 21 and Battlefield

Electronic Arts has confirmed that it has become a victim of hackers.

What happened

Hackers managed to obtain more than 780

GB of company data, including source codeFrostbite engine, which powers FIFA, Madden NFL and Battlefield. EA confirmed that “a limited amount of the game’s source code and related tools” were stolen from them, but assured that data about the players themselves did not fall into the hands of hackers. Since then, the company has improved its security measures.

Electronic Arts emphasizes that this incidentwill not affect her business and games. Although experts believe that in the future, hacking of games that run on this engine is possible, and this will result in significant financial losses. Moreover, hackers intend to sell the information they receive.

How did they do it?

The hackers themselves responsible for the hack toldjournalists a detailed diagram of how they did it. First, they bought a cookie stolen from one of the Electronic Arts employees and used it to enter a corporate chat on Slack. Next, they contacted the company’s IT support service and, introducing themselves as an employee, talked about a smartphone with a token for multi-factor authentication in EA’s closed corporate network that was allegedly lost at the party. After this, the support service gave them a new token, which became an entrance ticket to the closed Electronic Arts network.

In this network, hackers connected to the corporatedatabase, created a virtual machine for better orientation and access to another service. Through it, hackers stole the source code of the engine.

Electronic Arts confirmed that, in general, the described circuit is true.
