In several experiments, researchers comparedbasic hearing aids for $1,500 and premium models for $10,000, AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro, an elite version of headphones with noise-canceling function. The four devices were tested by 21 people with varying degrees of hearing loss. The researchers read short sentences and asked participants to repeat them verbatim.
AirPods Pro worked almost the same as regular oneshearing aids in a quiet environment and were slightly inferior to premium models. The AirPods 2 didn't work as well, but they still helped subjects hear more clearly than without hearing aids. In noisy environments, the AirPods Pro performed comparable to premium hearing aids, but only when the noise came from the side.
AirPods 2 retail for $129 in the US.and AirPods Pro for $249. Hearing aids are much more expensive. Before you buy them, you need to go through several medical examinations, get a prescription from an audiologist, and then visit a doctor to make sure they are properly tuned. The scientists decided to consider another alternative to the standard models.
