High efficiency water filter removes 99.9% of microplastics in 10 seconds

In the development, scientists used a covalent triazene framework (CTF). This is very

porous material with a large areasurfaces. There is “ample storage space for molecules,” the researchers write. Such materials are effective in removing organic dyes from industrial wastewater.

The team modified the molecules in CTF so that theyattracted water better and exposed the material to mild oxidation. The resulting filter turned out to be very effective. It removes microplastics from water - over 99.9% of pollutants were removed within 10 seconds. The material can also be reused many times without compromising its performance.

The researchers also developed a version of the polymerwhich absorbs sunlight, converts the energy into heat and uses it to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from water. This removed more than 98% of VOCs using only solar radiation. A prototype combining both types of membranes removed more than 99.9% of both types of contaminants.
