HII Receives $10.5M To Develop Plan To Upgrade Zumwalt Destroyers To Carry Hypersonic Weapons

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) will develop a plan for the modernization of two destroyers of the class

Zumwalt. For this, it has already received $10.5 million from the United States Navy.

HII President Kari Wilkinsonsaid that the company's specialists will provide support in upgrading the capabilities of two of the latest Zumwalt-class destroyers in service with the US Navy. We are talking about USS Zumwalt and USS Michael Monsoor. The first in the coming years will be equipped with hypersonic missiles.

HII invests heavily in the creation andimproving the infrastructure, equipment and tools that are needed to modernize modern ships. The company's investments approached $1 billion.

Zumwalt destroyers are equipped with an electric propulsion system, as well as sophisticated combat technologies and weapons. Their purpose is to provide anti-aircraft support to the fleet.

As part of the Zumwalt class, three destroyers were created.In addition to the previously mentioned USS Zumwalt and USS Michael Monsoor, the US Navy has USS Lyndon B. Johnson in service. By the way, HII received a contract to supply combat systems for the third Zumawalt-class ship.
