How and why a gaming computer was shoved into the body of a Soviet torpedo

For the sixth anniversary of World of Warships, the MAN-MADE team together with the game developers created a unique

torpedo computer. Discuss

Throughout the year, we have devoted muchattention to various activities, contests and competitions with physical and game prizes for our players. For the event timed to coincide with the birthday of World of Warships, we built a chain of events where absolutely everyone could receive a gift: in-game property, material gifts and money for attracting a new audience. In addition, the main prize, made by the MAN-MADE team at our request, has become the most significant and unique gift for players in the 6 years of the project's existence.

The most important thing is that you cannot buy it, but you canwas just to win by taking part in a special game event from World of Warships. The festive promotion ran from August 26 to October 6, 2021. During this time, players received guaranteed rewards every week and participated in prize raffles by completing combat missions. The game event was attended by numerous partners who provided valuable prizes. But the most coveted prize, of course, was the torpedo computer.

Our job is to ensure that the ownercomputer felt special, owning something unique and sometimes unrepeatable. We want to show the world that a computer can be not just a black or luminous box, but become a special item in your home or workplace, a luxury item and a designer interior accent.

For the platform of this unique computer, the choiceI immediately fell for Intel, because the processors of this manufacturer have a higher frequency per core, a higher boost frequency and, as a result, greater performance. I would like to note another important point that systems on stones from Intel work more stably with cables/adapters for video cards - this factor was of decisive importance when choosing components.

The choice of video card was influenced by the availability of NVIDIADLSS and ray tracing technologies. It is worth noting that the cards themselves are much cooler, and in the case of the reference design, one can also highlight their compact dimensions and high performance.

The most important parameter is stability of work -became decisive in the choice of RAM. Team Group has long established itself as a reliable memory manufacturer. The appearance also played an important role - camouflage in the style of the TUF line from ASUS was ideal for the implementation of the project.

The computer from World of Warships is equipped with a systemwater cooling ASUS ROG Ryuo 120. The liquid in it is designed for the entire service life of the system and does not require maintenance. One of the features of this dropsy is a color OLED display built directly into the pump: you can display your own images or animations, as well as information about the system.

The system has undergone various tests, including:
OCCT in the standard package - the core temperature did not exceed 81 degrees at the peak, and the average temperature was 72-73 degrees;
Hour stress test at Furmark - peak temperature 75-76 degrees.
Measurements of noise emission do not exceed the norm for a standard mid-tower case.

The project development process deserves a separatementions. The team behind the PC went to the real B-396 submarine and the Navy History Museum to see and study the combat torpedoes. The prototype of the hull was the Soviet 53-38 torpedo. A sketch of the project was drawn, after preliminary approval, a 3D model of the hull was created on its basis. The whole process of assembling the Computer-torpedo took a month from the moment the model was created to the finished case. The torpedo itself was 3D printed, body material - ABS plastic. For the case, a chassis for accessories and a transport box were made separately.

Having finally approved and agreed upon the torpedo, wevisited the Navy Museum in Moscow to personally touch the samples and draw inspiration from exhibits of the history of our submarine fleet, such as the B-396 "Novosibirsk Komsomolets" boat, and then work began.

"Torpedo" retained all the functionality of a full-fledgedPC. All ports, inputs and outputs are directly accessible, and the ability to connect to a Wi-Fi network is implemented. Like any other computer, it can be modified in the future to suit the user's needs. Adjusted for the size of the case, of course.

Special attention was paid to the systemcooling torpedo PC from World of Warships. It had to be thought out from scratch, since there were simply no analogues of such a case. Special openings were made for air supply and exhaust, and Noctua fans are responsible for purging inside the torpedo body, which are specially hidden so that you can enjoy the beauty of only the most important and beautiful components. The dust filters are original and were made specifically for the form factor of this computer.

The torpedo has impressive dimensions:the approximate length of the case is 1.2 meters, and the weight is 5-6 kg. However, its creators are confident that the unusual body will not cause any inconvenience during operation. Conceptually, the best option for placing it in a room is on a special shelf, towering above the desk.

The torpedo project was the next step in the fairwayour philosophy: we love interesting ideas, and especially when it comes to working together with a game project that many of our team play. The computer itself has gone through all the stages of real development of a unique product from scratch. The task, the team brainstorm, the selection of the craziest, and sometimes even the funniest, ideas, the study of compatibility and adequacy in choosing the geometry of the future computer and comfortable placement of components in it.
