As the results of a recent study showed,The cornea (the outer protective layer of the eye) produces a special kind of cell. They are called memory T cells. Their function is to fight various infections. The results of this study, conducted by experts from the Peter Doherty Institute of Infection and Immunity, were published in Cell Reports.
To conduct the study, a team of scientistsused a multiphoton microscope. Using it, experts studied corneal cells in mice that were infected with the herpes simplex virus. It turned out that memory T cells were produced in the eyes of the animals. Moreover, even after the virus was eliminated, these cells remained in the cornea of the eyes.
The eyes of healthy people were studied in a similar way. Immune cells were also found in their corneas.
