How dark matter "communicates" with the one we are made of. Key points about the new study

Astrophysicists have long puzzled over the connection between the mysterious dark matter and visible (or baryonic) matter.

) the matter that makes up stars and galaxiesand even people. In a study recently published in The Astrophysical Journal, scientists provided empirical evidence for a non-minimal connection between dark matter and gravity in the dynamics of local spiral galaxies.

Dark and ordinary matter

In astronomy and cosmology, as well as intheoretical physics - dark matter is a form of matter that does not participate in electromagnetic interaction and is therefore inaccessible to direct observation. It makes up about a quarter of the mass-energy of the Universe and manifests itself only in gravitational interaction. This means that everything that a person observes consists of ordinary, visible matter, which is also called baryonic matter.

It has to exist for our current models of the universe to work. But not only can't it be seen, felt, or interacted with in any way, scientists aren't sure what dark matter really is. 

However, there are clues, such as how darkmatter can interact with ordinary matter through gravity. However, how these interactions work is still a mystery. Now, in a new study, scientists have suggested that dark matter interacts with a non-minimal connection visible through gravity.

This means that dark matter is directly related to the curvature of space-time called the Einstein tensor. Simply put, it's a new type of interaction between dark matter and gravity.  If the researchers are right, then it makes sense that dark matter won'tinteract with space-time in the same way that a baryonic one does.

The authors of the work, Giovanni Gandolfi, Andrea Lapi and Stefano Liberati, analyzed data from numerous spiral galaxies. Based on their study, they suggest that perhaps dark matter and baryonic matter interactFor example, it is believed that there is no difference in how both forms of matter perceivespace-time. However, if there is a nonminimal relationship, then this suggests the opposite.

Many physicists believe that dark matter is mostly composed of hypothetical weakly interacting massive particles. However, until now,Scientists aren't sure they exist, because they've never been discovered. On the other hand, some cosmologists have shed light in the paston the relationship between gravity and dark matter, and even suggested that the latter arose from gravitons (hypothetical quantum units that collectively give rise togravitational force).

The new study also highlights the crucial role of gravity in the interaction between visible and dark matter. It mentions that the non-minimal relationship leads toto a change in the gravitational influence of dark matter on ordinary matter, and this is probably how two different forms of matter interactwith each other.

However, the scientists stress that their study is only one hypothesis, so more research work is needed to further study and confirm the special property of dark matter discussed in the paper.
