How to choose the right screen for your projector

You may have thought that it would be nice to set up something like a cinema at home. For this

A projector and screen are required. About how to choose the latter, – in the material of iXBT.com user Anton. Discuss

In fact, when choosing a "white screen" forthe projector needs to pay attention to certain details. They will allow you to enjoy a clear and high-quality picture while watching movies and TV shows. So what are these details?

  1. Screen aspect ratios and dimensions. It is necessary that the aspect ratio itselfscreen was identical to the aspect ratio on the projector. The most popular (and suitable for home use) standard is now – 16:9. You can also choose 16:10: it will allow you to play video with a resolution of 1920x1200 or 1280x800. In cinemas, by the way, the ratio is 2.39:1.
  1. Design... There are stationary and mobile screens.

Stationary can be installed on a frame orroll up. The first type is good because the picture in this case is not distorted. The second one – the ability to quickly remove it or move it to another place. Of the minuses – Picture distortion is possible due to insufficient tension.

Mobile screens often come with tripods. They can be rolled, inflatable, on a collapsible frame. Roll-up is convenient if you need to constantly move from one place to another and give presentations. The screens on the collapsible frame are firmly fixed, and the image is not distorted on them. Inflatable ones are usually used at various public events such as concerts, outdoor festivals, etc. True, they are not able to provide a high-quality picture.

  1. Gain. In other words, this is reflectivityscreen. The subtlety here is that the higher the gain, the smaller the viewing angles. Also, screens with a high gain can produce glare, while at the same time, if the ratio is less than 1:0, then the contrast will be higher (however, this requires a project with a powerful luminous flux).
  1. Viewing angle. When you choose a matte screen, you will get a large viewing angle. But if your model has a high gain or is equipped with ALR technology, then there may be problems with the viewing angle.
  1. Coating type... It can be white matte screen, gray screen, ALR screen, UST projector screen, rear projection screen, acoustically transparent screen.

The universal type is white matte, butTo use it, all light sources except the projector must be turned off. Gray provides high contrast and greater depth of dark tones, but light tones may be poorly visible. ALR screens allow you to get rid of reflected light, making the picture bright and contrasty. The only disadvantage of such screens – low viewing angles (30-35 degrees). screen for UST projectors – Designed for special devices that are installed close to the screen itself. Light can be applied to a rear projection screen from either side (front or back), and such solutions are usually used for advertising displays, etc. Acoustically transparent screens are suitable for creating home theaters.

Also, if you intend to watch movies in3D, it is better to choose a white screen or a projector with a higher brightness level. And to play video in 4K, special screens with a smooth surface are needed, which usually the manufacturer himself indicates.
