How to enter iPhone X, Xs, Xs Max into recovery mode or DFU

When your iPhone freezes seriously, the only solution is to enter it into recovery mode and try

update or restore it via iTunes. Apple has changed the way to force restart iPhone X, Xs, Xs max, so entering it into recovery mode or DFU mode now needs to be done differently.

If you restore your iPhone through iTunes in recovery mode, all your data will be deleted. First, always try updating the software via iTunes.

Do not confuse DFU mode and Recovery mode. In recovery mode, you will see a USB cable, an iTunes icon, and a link to support.apple.com/iphone/restore on the screen.

In DFU mode, you will not see anything on the screen, the screen remains completely black.

The difference between DFU and Recovery Mode is that a fundamentally different approach to recovery is used.

Transfer to recovery mode (Recovery Mode)

Step 1: UpdateiTunes

First, iTunes needs to be updated to the latest available version. If it is already open on your computer, you need to close the program.

Step 2: Connectiphone X to computer

Connect your iPhone X, Xs to your Mac or PC using the Lightning cable that comes with your smartphone.

Step 3: Force Reboot Phone

To do this:

  • first quickly press the buttonVolume up and release
  • then quickly press the buttonVolume down and release
  • and then pressSide buttonuntil you see the iTunes recovery screen.

This means that the iPhone has entered recovery mode. Now you can open iTunes.

Step 4: Update viaiTunes

A window with options will appear in iTunes.RefreshAndReestablishdevice. SelectRefresh, and the program will try to install the latest available version of the software, saving all your data. If the iPhone exits recovery mode during the download process, do not worry and just repeat the steps.

Step 5: Set Upiphone X, Xs

When the update is complete, use iTunes to set up your iPhone X, Xs.

Note: If you want to exit recovery mode, disconnect iPhone X, Xs from the computer and press the side button to turn it on.

How to enter iPhone X, Xs in DFU mode

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer.
  2. Press and quickly release the buttonvolume up.
  3. Press and quickly release the buttonvolume down.
  4. Click andhold the side buttonuntil the screen turns black, then press and hold the side button and volume down.
  5. After 5 seconds, release the side button while continuing to hold the volume down button.
    If the Apple logo appears, the side button has been held for too long.

In DFU mode, there are no identifications on the screen, the screen is completely black, iTunes will inform you that the device is in recovery mode.
If your device displays a screen that tells you to connect your device to iTunes, repeat these steps.

How to exit DFU mode on iPhone X, Xs

  1. Press and immediately release the buttonVolume up.
  2. Press and immediately release the buttonVolume down.
  3. Press and hold the Side Button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
