The rare green comet that streaked past Earth for the first time since the Stone Age will soon pass nearby
Comet C/2022 E3(ZTF) will look likea faint fan-shaped spot near the Red Planet during a flyby between the orbits of Earth and Mars on the evenings of Friday (February 10) and Saturday (February 11). EarthSky.org reports this. The site also publishes maps that can help you find the comet in the sky. It will be accessible to observers in the Northern Hemisphere.
This is the last chance to watch the cosmic icythe ball before it flies away at a speed of about 207,000 km/h. If it does not collapse along the way, it will return to Earth in 50,000 years.
If you can't find the faint comet, its flyby near Mars can be observed online as part of the Virtual Telescope Project on February 11. The broadcast will begin at 22:00 Moscow time.
The green comet was first discovered in March 2022astronomers at the Zwicky Transient Facility. This is a wide angle astronomical survey of the sky using a new camera attached to the Samuel Oshin Telescope at the Palomar Observatory in California, USA. It entered service in 2018 and replaced the Palomar Transient Factory.
