CNN has found that Chinese-made Huawei equipment could intercept communications from the US nuclear arsenal.
Journalists said that in 2017 the Chinesethe government has offered to spend $100 million to build an ornate Chinese garden at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. Later, US counterintelligence officials discovered that this facility was supposed to be strategically located on one of the highest points in Washington, in other words, in an ideal place for intelligence gathering. Construction, however, never started.
CNN calls the canceled project part of a sharpthe escalation of Chinese espionage in the United States over the past decade. In addition, the FBI found that Huawei equipment was installed on cell towers near US military bases. According to multiple sources, the equipment was capable of intercepting and disrupting Department of Defense communications, including those used by US Strategic Command, which oversees the country's nuclear arsenal.
It is not yet clear whether the Chinese managed to getany data. The Chinese government categorically denies any attempt to spy on the US. Huawei also claims that its equipment is unable to operate in any communications spectrum allocated to the Department of Defense. But sources told CNN that there is no doubt that Huawei equipment is capable of intercepting not only commercial cellular traffic, but also the highly limited radio waves used by the military.
