Huawei FreeBuds 3: real user review

Huawei has become one of those who have decided to repeat the success of the American tech giant Apple, having released earlier

Huawei FreeBuds 3 wireless headphones, which strongly remind us of AirPods and are positioned as their direct competitor. One of the users shared his opinion on this accessory.

Review of Huawei FreeBuds 3

Comparison with AirPods

Huawei's third wireless headphone designgeneration is based on the styling of the previous generation FreeBuds 2 Pro. The open-fit style has been preserved, but the legs have now become much thinner. The shape of each liner has also been slightly modified to improve comfort. The manufacturer pulled them a little and introduced a thin curve that provides a denser fit. Because of this, FreeBuds 3 is generally more convenient to use for extended periods of time than standard AirPods. These headphones will never fall out of your ears. Be sure!

Personally, I've never had a problem with AirPods, but with FreeBuds 3 I just felt more secure, especially when working. By the way, there is no need to worry about sweat or light rain, because they are IPX4 certified.

Perhaps the biggest difference for headphonesHuawei is the included case for charging. It is quite compact, easily fits in your pocket and stands out from the competition with its round shape, which attracts people's attention from the outside.

As for the features, it includes a portUSB-C at the bottom and a small pair of buttons on the right, which, incidentally, are very easy to miss on the black version of the case. Near the USB-C port there is a small LED indicator showing the battery level of the case, as well as an internal LED indicator showing the status of the FreeBuds 3 battery. They will flash green if the battery charge is above 60%; yellow if it is between 60% and 20%; red if less than 20% is left.

Sound quality

FreeBuds 3 turned out to be pretty decent, but,Of course, I can’t say that I am delighted with them. Huawei designed them as universal, and this is quite obvious when listening to music. If you are looking for superior sound quality, these headphones are not for you. But they have a bit more bass and richer sound in contrast to the alternatives.

Another advantage that earphones highlightHuawei, is the presence of active noise reduction. This is most noticeable when talking on the phone. Unfortunately, in practice, I could barely notice the difference in testing. Active noise reduction can be activated by double-clicking the left tab, although if desired, you can switch it to the right tab in the Huawei AI Life Android app. It can also be used to customize the function according to your personal preferences, although iPhone users cannot do this because there is no equivalent application.

Microphones deserve special praise here. The manufacturer used a hidden microphone design, and the results are very impressive. Phone calls sound very clean, and sending audio through WhatsApp is no problem. This contrasts sharply with AirPods.

Huawei has effectively used itsHiSilicon’s subsidiary chip company, by creating its own proprietary wearable chip, which is introduced in FreeBuds 3. Kirin A1 provides a quick and easy pairing process with any device that you use, although the benefits are most noticeable when using a Huawei phone.

Just put your earphones next to your Huawei phoneand open the charging case. Soon after, a pop-up window will appear on the screen, and a quick touch will connect them, this will allow you to immediately start using FreeBuds 3.

If you have another Android smartphoneor iPhone, you need to go to the Bluetooth menu in the Settings app and press the pairing button of the charger. When FreeBuds 3 appears, tap a name and start listening, the process is quite simple.

The only real disadvantage of using FreeBuds 3 on non-Huawei phones is the lack of automatic pause and playback. And this is a very useful feature.

As I said, there is no Huawei app on iOSAI Life, which, unfortunately, means an additional drawback for iOS users. Because users cannot check the battery level of the headphones and case while using them. However, the average charge level for FreeBuds 3 appears in the widget menu of the operating system.

Regarding the topic of connectivity, the company's effortsto reduce delays during games, of course, deserve attention. Thanks to the Kirin A1 chip, your device interacts with each earphone individually, and not with one main earphone, which then connects to the second.

I'm not the biggest gamer in the world, but myuntrained ears might notice a slight improvement in FreeBuds 3 compared to AirPods when using them when connected to a Huawei phone. However, when switching to the iPhone, it disappeared.

Battery Life and Charging

More about the battery. Huawei FreeBuds 3 is designed for 4 hours of use without recharging. These statements were confirmed in personal testing. But the results may ultimately vary depending on the use case and the connected device.

The attached case has enough charge to chargefor four more exercises. It takes only about an hour to fully charge the case via the USB-C cable. It might seem like a pretty long time for such a small item, but the Apple AirPods charging case takes about twice as much time.

If you are not a fan of cables, FreeBuds 3 alsoYou will be pleased with the support of wireless chargers at no extra charge, unlike competitors. To use this feature, you just need to put the case on the charger, but do not make the same mistakes as me. Be sure to place the case directly on the reel of the charger with the Huawei logo facing up. The external LED lights up if charging has started, but if this does not happen, try moving the case until you find the exact position of the coil. This is all explained in the official user guide, but at first I did not pay due attention to it.

Please note that wireless chargingtakes significantly longer than wired charging. However, Huawei has tried its best and says its technology is 50% faster than its Apple counterpart.

Is it worth buying?

Huawei's latest wireless headphones combine inwe’ve got everything we like about AirPods: design and simplicity, with active noise cancellation, significantly improved microphones, improved Android compatibility and a case for wireless charging.

The best part of all this is probably the price! I would recommend buying these wireless headphones to all AirPods fans using an Android smartphone. If you have an iPhone, it's probably best not to buy these headphones because not all features will be available. Links to purchase are here.
