Hubble publishes first photos after breakdown

Scientific observations resumed on the afternoon of Saturday 17 July. Telescope goals in the past

the weekend included the unusual galaxies shown in the images above.

On photos taken in the program underled by Julianne Dalcanton of the University of Washington in Seattle, a galaxy with unusual extended spiral arms is visible. In addition, Hubble photographed a pair of colliding galaxies. Scientists also observed globular star clusters and auroras on Jupiter through the telescope.

Hubble's payload computer, whichmanages and coordinates the work of the observatory's onboard scientific instruments, suddenly stopped on June 13. When the main computer was unable to receive a signal from the payload computer, it automatically put Hubble's science instruments into safe mode. This meant that the telescope would no longer be engaged in science while mission specialists analyzed the situation.
