Hubble releases photo of 'impossible' galaxy cluster

In honor of Halloween, the Hubble Space Telescope showed a “dark” image of the galaxy cluster Abell 611. It

is at a distance of more than1,000 megaparsecs, or 3.2 billion light years from Earth. Like all galaxy clusters, the existence of Abell 611 poses a mystery to astronomers—this “impossible” object simply shouldn’t exist.

In particular, it seems that in the “web”The rapidly rotating component galaxies do not have enough mass to prevent the cluster from flying apart. This is a well-known problem with massive structures such as galaxies and galaxy clusters. One gets the impression that there is simply not enough total mass in them to remain intact.

Interestingly, this problem does not occuron a smaller cosmic scale. For example, the passage of the planets in the solar system can be calculated relatively easily. No additional mass is required to explain the integrity of its or other star-planetary systems. Why this intuitive rule does not work on a large scale is unknown.

However, the most common theory is thatThe universe contains a huge amount of matter known as dark matter. This unknown quantity does not appear to interact with light the way other matter does—emitting, reflecting, or absorbing any part of the electromagnetic spectrum. All this makes dark matter incredibly difficult to describe.

The Abell 611 galaxy cluster is justan example of the possible existence of dark matter. All the objects there simply shouldn't stick together. That's why NASA employees called the photo "dark."
