To do this, the researchers replaced conventional devices for stimulating growing cartilage with a real anthropomorphic robot. The experiment was carried out on his shoulder joint.
The team also developed elastic bioreactors,to grow fibroblasts - basic cells of cartilage and other types of connective tissue. The cells were placed on elastic plastic supports that were stretched between a pair of rigid blocks.
The result was a reactor with cells to which it entersoxygen and nutrients. The scientists fixed it into the structure in an artificial shoulder joint and left it in the created conditions for 14 days. For half an hour a day, the robot "trained", making a variety of movements in order to create the necessary loads on the growing tissue.
The authors found that cells under such conditionsgrow faster than in immobility, and even the profiles of genetic activity in them differ. Now the authors want to find out whether the samples grown on the robotic joint are suitable for transplantation into humans. If yes, then how close are they to natural samples?
