Humans still have fur genes, but they are temporarily turned off

Biologists from the University of Utah Health and the University of Pittsburgh examined almost 20 thousand coding and

about 350 thousandregulatory genes in 62 animals to understand why some mammals, including humans and elephants, lack thick fur. The results showed that all the necessary genes were present in people's DNA, but that "evolution had switched them off."

Analysis of different animals showed that the samethe strategy has been used in the evolution of at least nine species of mammals that are on different branches of the evolutionary tree. In the ancestors of rhinoceroses, naked mole rats, dolphins and other hairless mammals, the "rejection" of fur is due to the deactivation of genes in the regulatory region of DNA.

Recall that the genetic code contained inCell DNA depends not only on the presence of specific genes, but also on transcription factors and a number of other regulatory mechanisms that determine whether a particular gene will be read, under what conditions or at what moment.

Researchers note that differentmammals had different "reasons" to lose their fur. For example, without a thick coat, elephants cool off more easily in hot climates, and the absence of hair helps walruses glide through the water. But regardless of the reason that caused the change, all of the studied hairless mammals revealed identical mutations in many of the same genes and regulatory regions of DNA.

Researchers note that research into the mutations that led to the shutdown of hair growth in mammals will help in the restoration of hair after loss associated with baldness or after chemotherapy.
